TWENTY-SIX
Iâm sorry to hear about your daughterâs friend. I donât think I have to tell you that. I think you already know. Youâre in a great deal of trouble with this Liquida.â Joselyn looks at me over the rim of her wineglass as she sips a little Chardonnay. âWhat exactly did you do to make him so angry?â
âI donât know.â
âOh, come on. You can tell me,â she says. âItâs just the three of us sitting here and Iâm willing to bet that Mr. Diggs already knows.â
âIf I knew I would tell you. But I donât.â
âWhy donât you tell me the truth?â she says. âOr elseâ¦â
âOr else what? Youâre going to get your crystal ball out, smack me in the head with it, and do another mind meld?â I say.
âIf you like. We can do that.â
The three of us, Joselyn, Herman, and I, are seated in a dark corner of the lounge at the Brasserie in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Century Boulevard, a stoneâs throw from LAX.
âHave you given any more thought to what we talked about the last time we met?â she says.
âYou mean before you turned white and slid under the table?â I ask.
âYes, before that.â
âAs I recall, you wanted to know whether I talked in my sleep?â I say.
âAnd you said you didnât know. As I recall, because there were no witnesses.â
âActually, it all depends.â
âOn what?â she says.
âOn the other thing we talked about.â
âWhich was?â
âYou may be clairvoyant but you have a bad memory,â I say. âThe question was whether you wanted me for my mind or my body.â
Herman is fondling the beer bottle in front of him nervously, as if heâs wandered into the middle of a conversation on birth control.
âIâve had some time to think about this,â I tell her.
âHave you?â She looks at me over the glass, feline oval eyes and a sultry grin. âAnd what did you conclude?â
âThat if you wanted me for my mind, Iâd probably put us both to sleep. But if it was my body you were after, I doubt if Iâd talk.â
âAnd why is that?â
âI donât think Iâd get much sleep.â
âYes, but you might talk,â she says. âIt would depend on how I tied you to the bed.â
âInteresting hypothesis.â
âPerhaps we need to conduct an experiment,â she says.
âI take it you have a lab upstairs,â I say.
âI do.â
Herman clears his throat. âYou guys wanna get a room, donât let me get in the way,â he says. âIâll just go out front, stand in the fountain for a while. Maybe light up a cigar soâs I can ask you how it was for both of you when the experimentâs over.â
âPerhaps you should join us,â she says.
âNo, thanks,â says Herman. âI draw the line at that.â
âYou could take notes,â I tell him.
She laughs. âI think weâve embarrassed him,â she says. âWe were joking.â
âWe were?â I give her a crestfallen look.
âOf course. I think so. Anyway, we have business to discuss,â she says.
âYou mean that wasnât it? Glad to hear it.â Herman, for all of his earthiness, is a prude.
